Do you support a large amount of metadata? Can we use on our channel? What about engaging an solution? What does pseudo streaming mean? Knowing and understanding the terminology can be a challenge. There is WTMI (way too much information) moving at the speed of light to keep it all straight.

No need to drop facts about how rapid the space is redefining itself, there are plenty of articles about that. At this point it’s more relevant to shed some light on the ever growing number of terms that online professionals are adding to their vocabulary. Most of us in the online industry are being constantly pushed to improve our jargon to be able to clarify technical setups, explain challenges and emphasize opportunities.

While we are fighting to keep up with the developing online video expressions, our partners and clients are having problems doing the same. Regularly, when meeting potential clientele the reality strikes, when the majority of the time is spent on explanation rather than on valuation of the solution. Furthermore, delivering in-depth pitches or presenting new solutions often lead to new terms being used and result in complex and easily misunderstood messages.

This got me thinking about what can be done to close this vocabulary gap. The first thing that came to my mind was “There must be an for that?” After some research it was pretty obvious – no for that. From here it was pretty clear that an had to be brought to life.  So I created one.

The solution is called the Online Video Dictionary app. With this app, users can quickly and automatically, browse the dictionary or search for specific terms when they are in need of an explanation. The dictionary is based on the most common used terms in the online video industry. The app is free and can be downloaded from Market today. If there are enough requests an version will be made available.

According to a Q2  report by Brightcove and TubeMogul labeled “Online Video & the Media Industry”, the most referred video online came from the social networking sites Facebook and Twitter.

Not only that, but social network viewers watched video longer compared to viewers who were referred to video from search sites such as Google and Yahoo! One minute and 47 seconds to be exact, whereas Google viewers watched video for one minute 34 seconds and Yahoo! for one minute 27 seconds.

Word of mouth is long believed to be one of the best ways to get information and in an article by MediaPost News, Jeff Whatcott of Brightcove was quoted saying: “It used to be all about search.  But Facebook and Twitter are becoming significant traffic drivers, since social networks are increasingly how people are discovering video.”

Speaking of video referral traffic, Facebook is growing at an average monthly rate of 48% and Twitter at an average of 38.7% followed by 35% for Yahoo! and 15.5% for Google, according to the Q2 report.   At this rate, it is projected that Facebook (currently at 7.9%) will surpass Yahoo! (16.8%) and be second to Google (40.1%) for overall video streams by the end of the year.

A prediction many are sure to keep their eyes on.

On Monday the 7th of December Brightcove are announcing the Brightcove Alliance, a global ecosystem of partners developing solutions and services with the Brightcove online video platform.  Brightcove is one of the world’s largest online video platforms, used by large media companies, businesses and organizations worldwide. Preview Networks is very proud to announce that it is one of companies that will be part of this Alliance of technology and content providing companies.

Through our partnership with Brightcove, we enable Brightcove publishers to access our video feeds that contain high quality film trailer content for all the latest movies in nine languages (currently English, German, Italian, Dutch, Swedish, Danish, Finnish and Spanish and French as of January 2009).  Current Brightcove publishers in the UK include many huge online media The Times, The Daily Mail, Bauer (owners of FHM), Channel Four’s Film Four website, etc.

Publishers can easily take advantage of this free content to save time and hassle in aggregating video, images   and information while quickly increasing the infotainment appeal of their website.

Preview Networks is the only content provider that operates in nine European territories   and provides trailers in local formats. The partnership with Brightcove will mean that Publishers will have access to this content for all the major European territories they operate in. As the network grows the company looks forward to being able to provide a greater variety of interesting content from EPK material (press footage, interviews, red-carpet, etc) and will eventually look to providing other forms of content.

Great news!  We have managed to relaunch our xml feeds through the new version of the Brightcove player. Brightcove is a video player provider that is part owned by Sky News backer News Corp. Brightcove recently integrated with the Times and other News Corp publications as the new video delivery system. The recent upgrade from Version 2 to Version 3 meant we had to do some reprogramming on our side. Due to our recent success we are now in discussion to launch this Brightcove service throughout our European territories and Brightcove see us as an important content partner going forward. This is great news and we are all really excited at play about this exciting step forward.

Since the relaunch of our feed:
• We have updated the Scottish Tv (STV.tv) with all the latest content
• We have just signed a contract with the Guardian to start using our feeds instead of our normal embed player. This will mean that all their journalists and editors will have access to our library of trailers, and eventually all the other EPK material we plan on syndicating on your behalf.
The Times have also implemented the feed

Times

In a statement from Brightcove CEO Jeremy Allaire.

“Times Online can now take advantage of Brightcove 3, our next-generation platform, to help deepen engagement with their 16 million online readers, expand online advertising opportunities and broaden their reach across the web”.

So we are looking to develop lots of traffic with this interesting business development opportunity. We are now working on other exciting integration and our contacts within Brightcove in the UK are actively helping us in this process of setting up trials with: 1. Hearst Digital
2. Bauer Group
3. Northecliffe Media (Daily Mail)
4. Conde Nast 5. Film4 and Channel 4

So far the response has been really excellent and we are expecting to have several new partners on board soon.
